About the Play
That's What Makes Them Pirates began with Mike Mennard's dream of creating a kids' pirate CD. He always loved the ride "Pirates of the Caribbean" at Disneyland and wanted to turn that love into a musical adventure.
That dream came true in 2008 with the release of Pirates Do the Darnedest Things, from Family Fridge Music.
Dr. Mark Robison, professor of English at Union College, and director of the college's drama program, hinted to Mike that those pirate songs might make a great musical.
So Mike worked on a script. "And now," says Mike, "it is so exhilarating, seeing actors, designers, and choreographers at work on something that not so long ago didn't exist but in the mind of a couple of crazy pirate dreamers."
